Webb images stunning views of Saturn’s moon!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Saturn’s unique moon “Titan” is captured by the James Webb Space Telescope. The largest moon of the planet Saturn is Titan. As per scientists, Titan is in a period where its atmosphere is very cloudy.

Titan is kind of like Earth in some ways. But most of its land is frozen water. Methane and other hydrocarbons are found in the water of its rivers and seas.

Also, its atmosphere is thick and hazy, and there are methane clouds all over it.

Key facts!

  • Titan was observed by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) for a total of 15 hours.
  • Researchers intended to investigate Titan’s atmosphere to map the spread of the haze and determine the presence of new gases.
  • They discovered not one but two clouds, one of which was situated over Titan’s largest sea.
  • As the northern hemisphere of Titan is currently in late summer it is receiving more solar energy.
  • Thus, scientists expected a high level of cloud activity.
  • The images were captured by the Web’s Infrared Camera.
  • The Infrared Camera can click at several different wavelengths of light.
  • In the case of Titan, it enabled scientists to differentiate between the lower atmosphere and the upper atmosphere.
  • In addition to locating the clouds and identifying them.
  • According to astronauts, the James Webb Space Telescope is going to turn its sharp gaze back to Titan in May or June of 2023.
  • This would be done to further refine scientists’ understanding of the chemicals that are present in its atmosphere.
