ASEAN women learn peacekeeping from India’s experts!

Recommended for Middle Grades

India is going to train some awesome women from Southeast Asia to be peacekeepers in the United Nations! Isn’t that cool? Let us give you the scoop on all the important details.

So, it all started when India’s Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh, had this brilliant idea last year. He wanted to create an initiative called ‘women in United Nations Peacekeeping operations’ to strengthen the defense cooperation between India and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). And guess what? It’s finally happening this year!

Important Details

  • First things first, on Monday, March 29, everyone celebrated the 75th U.N. Peacekeepers Day. India is actually one of the biggest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions. They currently have around 5,900 troops helping out in 12 different U.N. Missions.
  • Now, let us tell you about the two initiatives India has planned. The first one is called the ‘India-ASEAN Initiative for women in UNPK operations.’ In September, they’ll be organizing special courses just for women peacekeepers from ASEAN countries. Around 20 peacekeepers (that’s two from each country) will get trained at the Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping in India. They’ll become real peacekeeping superstars!
  • But wait, there’s more! The second initiative is called a ‘Table Top Exercise.’ No, it’s not a game you play on the table. It’s a special training activity for women officers from ASEAN. They’ll get to learn all about the challenges faced in UN peacekeeping missions. And you know when this exciting exercise will take place? In December!
  • The Indian Army is doing a fantastic job in training peacekeepers. They have a special center in New Delhi called CUNPK (Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping). Every year, they train over 12,000 troops there! They also share their knowledge with other countries. Sometimes, they even send mobile training teams to other friendly nations.
  • India is really awesome because they are leading the way in having women peacekeepers. They sent special teams of women to Congo and Abyei to help keep peace there. They even have women police and staff officers in other peacekeeping missions too. It’s all about girl power and spreading love and laughter. Who knows, maybe one day you can be a peacekeeper too!
