Roman Shipwreck’s Shining Treasures!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Hey, ever-curious reader! Guess what? Something super exciting happened underwater! A long time ago, there was a big ship called Capo Corso 2, and it was carrying lots and lots of beautiful glassware, like fancy cups and bowls, all the way from the ancient Roman times!

Ocean Odyssey: Ancient Shipwreck!

  • Now, this ship had a little accident and sank deep into the sea, around 350 meters down! But don’t worry, because awesome underwater archaeologists discovered it in 2012. They found it in the sea between Capo Corso and the island of Capraia.
  • Can you believe it? This ship was sailing around in the 1st and early 2nd century AD! That’s like, way, way, WAY before our grandparents’ grandparents were even born! Can you imagine that? The ship was probably on its way to deliver all that glassware to different places.
  • But guess what the cool scientists did next? They used something called a photogrammetric survey to study the ship. Wow, big word, right? It’s like taking pictures of the ship from far away to see how it’s doing. They wanted to understand how the sea and humans have been changing things around it.
  • And then, they brought out their secret weapon – a super awesome machine called Arthur, the remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Arthur is like a robot that can swim underwater and do all kinds of cool stuff. It can go as deep as 2500 meters! That’s deeper than any creature we know, even deeper than some really big whales!
  • Arthur can shoot videos in high-definition, just like the movies we watch. It can also move the sand around and even pick up things with a special claw! With Arthur’s help, the scientists found many glass treasures like bottles, cups, and bowls. They also found two shiny bronze basins and some strange-sounding amphorae!
  • The scientists were so excited about their discovery that they made an important decision. They carefully collected all the glass and other things and took them to a special lab in a place called Taranto. They wanted to do some scientific magic to learn more about the glassware and how it has changed over time.
  • You know what? The researchers have a fun game they like to play! They want to figure out where this ancient ship was coming from. They think it might have started its journey in the Middle East, maybe from a port in places like Lebanon or Syria. Imagine that, glassware sailing all the way from far, far away!
  • This is just the beginning of the adventure! The scientists are really curious and want to learn more about this amazing ship and its glass treasures. They want to know more about the time it sailed and the places it went to.
  • You know what’s super cool? The scientists from Italy and France are working together to solve this puzzle. They want to be like a superhero team, a team of great explorers! They are planning to do even more exciting projects together in the future. We can’t wait to see what they find next!
  • So, there you have it, the awesome story of the Capo Corso 2 shipwreck and its precious glassware. Isn’t it amazing how people can discover such old and wonderful things underwater? The scientists are like treasure hunters, looking for clues to uncover the secrets of the past.
  • Remember, history can be fun and exciting, and these brave scientists are like detectives solving ancient mysteries! Who knows, maybe one day, you could be an explorer too, discovering amazing things hidden beneath the waves. Until then, keep being curious and learning new things every day! The world is full of wonders waiting for you to explore!
