- The Republic of the Maldives is an independent country, with the Island of Male as its capital.
- It is located in the Indian Ocean and consists of a chain of about 1,200 small coral islands and sandbanks.

- Tamil and Sinhalese people from south India and Sri Lanka were the first settlers in the Maldives.
- The official language of the country is called Dhivehi.
- Maldives is considered to be one of the most ideal holiday destinations in the world, attracting a lot of visitors.
- Thus, the tourism industry is the main economic industry of Maldives.
- Its white sandy beaches, crystalline lagoons and coconut palms are a delight to behold.
- Maldives’ lagoons are also globally known to be the perfect spot for snorkelling.
