The Sweet and Sour of Summers

Lemonade, ah yes, that drink which is the very essence of a long, stifling summer afternoon. The sun beats down so fiercely, you can almost feel the dust on your feet baking through your thin slippers. And then, the sweet-sour tang on your tongue – a single drop of nimbu pani, and the whole world feels brighter. It’s so simple – water, sugar, the juice of a lemon – yet somehow, it washes away the heat and leaves you sighing with contentment.

We called it nimbu pani, of course. A chilled glass, perhaps with a floating mint leaf, offered on every visit to an aunt’s house. Aunty would fuss, saying “Just a little more, child, you look parched!” Meanwhile, at a roadside stall, a weary bullock cart driver might stop, his face etched with the lines of the sun, for a quick swig before continuing on his way.

Sunlight squeezed in liquid gold,
A tartness bright, a sweetness bold.
Each sip a whispered summer rhyme,
Of laughter shared, of carefree time.

They say lemonade has been with us since time out of mind, over a thousand years at least. No wonder then, that it feels woven into the very fabric of childhood. Each country has its way with it, someone once told me – some laced with rosewater, some as simple as can be, just a squeeze of lemon in a tumbler of water.

And the very word, “lemonade”… it has a ring to it, like something whispered after a long journey. They say it came to us from faraway lands, carried on the backs of camels, and the tang of the lemon itself has the taste of desert sun upon it. Sometimes, you might even get it fizzy, the bubbles tickling your nose – a strange, modern twist.

But no matter what, a glass of lemonade will always speak of long summer days and carefree laughter, won’t it?

So next time you take a sip, let your mind take flight,
A journey of flavours, of darkness and light.
For in that humble glass, a whole world will swirl,
The story of summers, of boy and of girl.
