New math curriculum helps elementary classes in the US
A new math curriculum called Reveal Math from McGraw Hills (an educational book company) has been introduced in Stoney Creek Elementary School, Charlotte, US. Using this new curriculum, the students of first grade can compare numbers easily. They have also learnt the concepts of “equal to”, ” greater than” and “less than”.
The teachers of the school said that the old curriculum was difficult to follow. The chapters were very long and it was difficult to understand. So, last year, the board of education decided to change the curriculum.
In the newly introduced curriculum, teachers’ material, assessments and workbooks are provided for the next six years. The teachers also said that the new curriculum has more scope and opportunities for children. The Reveal Math program may also help in improving test scores for students. Now, the education board plans to change the curriculum for grades 6 to 12 as well.
Katie Austin, the curriculum director, revealed that the new math curriculum includes a variety of resources, study materials and diverse activities to help students learn in a better way than the old curriculum.
Teachers’ views on the new curriculum
Lindsey Kilgore is a first-grade teacher. She revealed that the individual units are short as compared to the previous curriculum. The concepts are easy to access. Moreover, the colourful illustrations make the study sessions more interesting and students get engaged easily.
Wendy Hawes, another elementary teacher said that all the chapters in the new curriculum are presented very nicely. Teachers also have many options to teach the students and it has made learning easy.
Students’ reaction on the Reveal Math curriculum
Fourth-grade students, Ayla Cole and Emilee Carpenter said that the Reveal Math curriculum is easier than the old curriculum. Each chapter in the new Math book starts with “Be Curious” and it is followed by “Notice and Wonder”. Some new characters have been introduced in the math workbook and it has made the math lessons more interesting.
Math can be scary for many students, no matter where they are, around the world. However, new teaching methods like these can always help make it interesting and easy.
