Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama returned to the public after an almost two-year absence. The Dalai Lama claimed to be in excellent health and jokingly said that he and the doctor could even engage in a friendly round of boxing.

The Dalai Lama also provided brief narration from the Jataka Tales while addressing a group. This was followed by a bodhichitta practise at a temple.

Purity of Jataka Tales!

The Jataka stories are a large collection of writings from India that tells the stories of Buddha’s former births as both a human and an animal. Whatever form the future Buddha takes, the story’s moral lesson is communicated through the example of the character’s deeds.

The sacredness of Bodhichitta!

Bodhichitta is the Sanskrit word for “mind awakening”. In the Buddist practice, compassion is often used to turn emotional reactions into attention. Further, the attention is then used to awaken to the nature of the mind. According to Buddism the true nature of the mind is “emptiness”.

The practice of Buddism includes not just practising compassion but also focusing on social and environmental issues.

The Dalai Lama was born in 1935. He is one of five children born to a peasant family in a village in the northeast of Tibet. The Dalai Lama became a holy or spiritual leader when he was six.

One of the most interesting things about the Dalai Lama is that he was forced to flee to another country in 1959 after China took over Tibet. His official home was moved to Dharamsala.
