Book Review – The Miracle on Ebenezer Street

“An absolute cracker . . . I utterly loved it.” – Ross Montgomery.

‘The Miracle on Ebenezer Street’ is a wonderful book written by Catherine Doyle. It was first published on 29th September 2020, by Penguin Random House, Children’s UK.

The book revolves around a boy named George Bishop, who lives with his father, Hugo Bishop, and his grandmother, whom he calls Nano Flo.

George’s dad refused to celebrate Christmas ever since George’s mother died in an accident on the day of the festival. It had been 3 years since then, and George and his grandmother always hoped Hugo would change his mind, if not sooner than later.

Unable to contain themselves from celebrating, George and his grandmother wear wigs and mustaches, and then secretly go to the Christmas Markets to have fun, but that of course is not enough for the duo, and so Christmas usually goes in vain. This time, when George and Nano Flo go to the market, George spots a shop named ‘Marley’s Curiosities’. When he goes in, he is asked for his age, for only kids are allowed in the shop. After he tells how old he is, he is permitted in. As soon as he enters, he witnesses shelves upon shelves of magical Christmas items, including hats, Christmas crackers and enchanted snow globes. Besides all that, he also spots his relatives whom he has not met for 3 years but for a short while, before turning his attention to the man in the shop; Marley. It was quite unusual to see Marley reading about events that took place in 1843 when there is so much happening in the present times. Looking around, George decides to buy a Christmas Snow globe. Exiting the shop, he goes home only to recognize the snow globe’s incredible powers that he thinks will use to change Hugo’s mind about celebrating Christmas.

In the book, George used the snow globe thrice. The first miracle showed him and Hugo celebrating Christmas in the past, the second showed George’s cousins celebrating one in the present, and the third showed them the consequences if they would not celebrate it in future. If one wants to know more about the miracles George and his family were part of, then one needs to find the book, and read it.

The Miracle on Ebenezer Street

The book, from the look itself, appears enchanting. It highlights the beauty, magic and true meaning of what Christmas stands for. I found the book irresistible: the plot intriguing, the setting festival-like, the characters interesting, and the flow of events spontaneous. Since I am a complete fan of fantasy, I enjoyed every bit of my time living and experiencing the lives of the characters described in the book especially Marley: his secretive way of observing other people, his different bent-of-mind, and his intriguing Curiosity shop amazed me completely. Going by how my experience has been, I can say convincingly that this is a great book to lay one’s hands on especially for those who like fantasy, magic and festivities that Christmas brings along!
