“I’m a woman. Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman. That’s me.”

The formidable Maya Angelou’s poignant words echo the essence of 21st century womanhood. She is no longer an appendage or a supplement but the core and root of today’s world. The modern society is defined by the calibre of its women. Even as UN Women delineates the need of gender equality for a sustainable tomorrow, it has become quite evident that progress of women is something which can’t be undermined any longer.
International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also promotes women’s equality. We shouldn’t restrict Women’s Day to a particular day , rather celebrate it everyday and salute the women in our lives.

Post marriage, I chose to complete my education rather than staying back at home. I was always passionate about learning and imparting knowledge. It was difficult but I convinced my family to let me pursue my education. In those days, women were majorly homemakers and they were not motivated to take up jobs. I wanted to create a positive impact in the society by putting my education to good use. Thus, I decided to break the barriers and stepped out of the house to take up responsibility of an educator. It took a lot of courage and self-belief to speak my mind and stand my ground.
Today’s woman is a multi-tasker and ready to accept new responsibilities keeping in mind her priorities and fulfilling all obligations towards the family.

I am an ardent admirer of Savitribai Phule , most known for opening the first women’s school in India. Further, she opened 18 schools for girls, and Savitribai became India’s first female teacher and headmistress. She also spoke against the evils of infanticide and caste system deep rooted in the society. Seeking inspiration from her, I try doing my bit towards the society.
