Curious Times in conversation with Charu Kapoor

Education is an integral part of a child’s upbringing. We, at Curious Times, have made it our aim to ensure that we also play an active role in imparting the right knowledge to all the Curious children. As such, we also try to ensure that we are always in touch with the leaders in education today and learning from them. After all, it is important to learn from the best.

So, today, we present to you a one-on-one conversation with Charu Kapoor. She is the Junior Coordinator of Seth Anandram jaipuria School, Kanpur. It aims at the all-round development of the child/individual. It focuses on the current needs and aspirations of a society, its inherent values, concerns as well as broad human ideals.

When did you decide to step into the world of education? What motivated you to become an Educator?

Since I was a child, I used to admire the teachers a lot and wanted to become one myself. Becoming a teacher means moulding future generations through the curriculum you set and bits of personal wisdom you impart. You’ll have the ability and power to teach life lessons as well as core subjects. There’s a good chance that you may be spending more waking hours with these children than their own parents. This means you’ll be the one to help teach them social skills, time management, conflict resolution, how to cope with stressors and how to focus on a task. The best teachers bring their passion, personality and sense of humor to the classroom. Great teachers are committed to finding new and different ways to deliver content so that it’s more interesting for the students. The enthusiasm you bring to the table will likely be mirrored by your students, which makes the classroom is a highly energizing environment. The greatest thing you can do is to let your unique personality elevate the learning experience. Use your individual gifts and talents to inspire and motivate your students. There will be days that feel tougher than others, your humor can help you move forward.

Share some of the challenges you have faced in your career journey. How did you convert those challenges into the pillars of success?

When I chose this career 22 years ago, I started with Primary Classes. I had to deal with young children and fresh minds. It was all-together a new experience for me. I was amazed to see the inquisitiveness of those 6 years old kids. In those times, I realized that education was all about rote learning and it was not child-centric at all, but as I gained experience I realized that education is not only restricted to academics. A school is a miniature form of society where we focus on the overall development of the child. According to me, a good learner can only become a good teacher; with time I enhanced my professional knowledge with the help of various courses and facing different kinds of people in the form of parents daily. Even during this pandemic, as an educator, I faced a lot of challenges, but with immense patience and determination and with the help of ICT tools, I overcame the challenges. Also, I used various Microsoft Tools to make the virtual classroom interesting for my students. With 22 years of experience, I can firmly say that we should basically focus on child-centric learning, wherein focusing on every child’s need.

What are the changes have you observed over the years in the field of education? Are you happy with these changes?

As an educator, I could see a major shift from rote learning to child-centric learning over the years. The emergence of blended learning, online classes, and experiential learning has changed how students are interacting with the educational content. There has been a dramatic shift in the education ecosystem as a whole, and now blended classes have become a norm in all levels of education. Of course, I am happy to observe and experience these changes that are being made in the favor of the students.

What changes would you like to see in the field of Education? What role can the various stakeholders like the government, teachers, students and parents play in this?

Education is not always about becoming a rich, big person. It should be about humanism. Students must also be taught in-depth about morals of life and inculcated with humanistic values. They should be taught that life is much beyond money and success it’s not measured in money. Students must be taught about technology right from the early years of their education so that it does not come like an alien thing in their later times . Instead of focusing the evaluation on a three-hour exam, the focus of evaluation should be classroom participation by a student, projects, communication and leadership skills and extra-curricular activities. Governments can also be considered a major stakeholder in a business, as they collect taxes from the company (corporate income taxes), as well as from all the people it employs (payroll taxes) and from another spending the company incurs (sales taxes). Parental involvement in a child’s learning process from the early years to high school remains among the key factors contributing to a child’s success in school and life. It is widely associated with better learning outcomes. The classroom teacher is an influential factor that determines the success of a curriculum as he would be the one who takes the responsibility to implement it and ensures meeting the students’ needs. Students, when given great control over problem-based learning projects, will in turn become stakeholders themselves. They will be capable of criticizing projects constructively and thus contributing to curriculum design in later stages.

The small intangible rewards are some of the best parts of the job. There are little joys that come from teaching children and even teens. The funny things they say, even when they don’t realize they’re funny, their silly habits, the insightful questions they ask and the amusing stories they’ll write all make the job more satisfying. The memories you’ll make and the keepsakes you’ll get are things you’ll treasure for years. Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.

“No act of kindness is ever wasted” -Aesop

The magnitude of a kind act is not essential, what truly matters is the thought, the emotion that initiated such an act. A kind word, a gentle smile or a thoughtful gesture can have a tremendous impact on someone’s life, it can heal a wounded heart or revive a suffering soul. Hence, my dear children, never refrain from doing a good deed, bringing a smile to someone’s face, hope to someone’s ravaged life.
