India as a democracy
The East India Company was initially created in 1600 to serve as a trading body for English merchants, specifically to participate in the East Indian spice trade.
The British landed in India in Surat on August 24, 1608. While India has a rich and recorded history going back 4000 years to the Indus Valley Civilization in Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, Britain had no indigenous written language until the 9th century almost 3000 years after India. Still the British started capturing this huge country and controlled it from 1757 to 1947
Direct administration by the British, which began in 1858, effected a political and economic unification of the subcontinent. When British rule came to an end in 1947, the subcontinent was partitioned along religious lines into two separate countries—India and Pakistan ; the eastern portion of Pakistan later split off to form Bangladesh.
Though India became a free nation on August 15, 1947, it declared itself a Sovereign, Democratic and Republic state with the adoption of the Constitution on January 26, 1950 written by Dr B R Ambedkar..
The Constituent Assembly of India came into existence as per the provisions of Cabinet Mission Plan of May 1946. Its task was to formulate constitution for facilitating appropriate transfer of sovereign power from British authorities to Indian hands.
Democracy means a government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
Democracy ensures proper functioning of the government since it is the people who elect them and therefore this makes them more accountable.
Democracy protects basic human rights such as freedom of speech and religion; the right to equal protection under law; and the opportunity to organize and participate fully in the political, economic, and cultural life of society. Democracy improves the quality of decision making. Democracy enhances the dignity of citizens.
By democracy, Indian citizens play the most active role in setting up a government that strives to boost Indian economy among the world and uplifts the country as a whole to be self sustaining and improve its infrastructure making the whole country rich in diverse conditions and sectors, safe and clean and improve societies for much better quality of life.
