1000-year-old onion and garlic remedy can help fight deadly bacteriaAntibiotics are a range of powerful medicines that kill bacteria or slow their growth. They play a very important role in healthcare.

However, over time, many bacteria have become stronger and deadlier. Today, there is a growing concern that, in the future, current antibiotics will not be able to fight dangerous bacteria. So, scientists are working hard to find new solutions.

A team of UK researchers has found a possible alternative from a very unusual place - a manuscript (written text) from the medieval period. This period lasted from about 476 CE to the beginning of the 14th century.

This ancient medical book is called Bald's Leechbook. The book includes a 1000-year-old remedy (medicine), called Bald's eyesalve.

Bald's eyesalve is made from onion, garlic, wine and bile salts (which comes from a cow's stomach).

Experiments conducted on the remedy has shown that it can fight biofilm infections. These are bacteria that resist antibiotics.

Scientists believe that it could be particularly used to treat diabetic foot infections, which are very dangerous.

The team has been working on the safety of the mixture and hope to study it further.
