12,000-year-old human footprints found in Utah desert!
Recommended for Middle Grades
Human footprints that are 12,000 years old have been discovered in the Utah desert, United States. Approx 88 footprints were found in the Utah desert including both adults and children. The footprints were found on the alkali flats of the Utah Testing and Training Range (UTTR), which is a base dedicated to the US Air Force.
Details about the footprints
The researchers were heading toward an archaeological site within the Air Force area when they spotted some foot imprints. These prints appeared to be ghost tracks, they reveal themselves under the right amount of moisture.
The newly discovered footprints were similar to the footprints that were spotted at another excavation project that was based at White Sands National Park, New Mexico. Those are the oldest human footprints, said to be 23,000 years old discovered in America.
Upon studying the footprints, the researchers have found evidence of footprints of adults and children about 5 to 12 years of age. The main researcher, Dr Duke explained that the people whose footprints are discovered had been walking in shallow water. The sand on which they walked, rapidly filled their print behind them. Also, a layer of mud below the sand kept the print intact.
The footprints discovered in Utah have sparked hope in archaeologists of finding similar evidence from the Pleistocene era.
