24-year-old Turkish woman is world’s tallest woman

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Would you like to be the world’s tallest woman or the world’s tallest man?

Well, in order to be the world’s tallest woman, you would have to be taller than Rumeysa Gelgi from Turkey.

Guinness World Records has confirmed that 24-year-old Gelgi is the tallest living woman in the world currently. She is 215.16 cm or 7 feet and 0.7 inches tall. This is not the first time that Gelgi has broken a Guinness World Record. In 2014, at the age of 18, she broke the record of the tallest female teenager.

While being the world’s tallest woman sounds amazing, unfortunately, her height is due to a very rare disease called Weaver Syndrome.

Weaver Syndrome

What is Weaver Syndrome?

It is a rare genetic disorder (present at birth) in which children show rapid growth of height and advanced bone age.

Weaver Syndrome affects the bones and skeleton and this means Gelgi has difficulty walking. So, she mostly uses a wheelchair. Gelgi said in a video that she is the first known person in Turkey to have this disease.

Sadly, due to her condition, Gelgi was bullied during her childhood. But she says that her family has always supported her. And many people on the internet said that they find her story inspiring and have encouraged her.

What would you say if you met the world’s tallest woman, Rumeysa Gelgi? How would you like to show your support? Write to us on My Expressions at Curious Times.
