This year’s WBBL (Women’s Big Bash League) season of T20 cricket will include 8 of India’s star players.

What is the WBBL?

The WBBL (Women’s Big Bash League or the Weber WBBL) is the a women’s domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in Australia. The competition features eight city-based franchises, similar to the men’s Big Bash League (BBL).

This year, the 7th edition of the WBBL started on 14 October and will go on till 27 November 2021. The defending champions are the Sydney Thunders.

8 Indian players are part of the WBBL and it is the highest number of Indians in the WBBL till now. They include Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, Shafali Verma, Radha Yadav, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur, Richa Ghosh, and Poonam Yadav.

Only Mandhana and Harmanpreet have played in the WBBL before. So, its the first time for 6 of the players above.

On 14 October, in the first match, Shafali Verma’s debuted, playing for the Sydney Sixers. Verma marked the occasion with a brilliant direct hit to dismiss Melbourne Stars’ Annabel Sutherland on 14 October. Sidney Sixers won by 6 wickets.

COVID-19 impact

As the season started, this weekend’s WBBL matches face some difficulties. This is because southern Tasmania has been put under a 3-day sudden lockdown. And 4 WBBL matches are to be played there. Tasmania is suggesting the matches can still be held but without spectators.
