The Pizza Trick: Gauss’s Solution!

  • Carl Friedrich Gauss was a genius who loved studying curved surfaces. He came up with something called the Theorema Egregium, which is a fancy way of saying a remarkable or excellent theorem. Now, let’s see how this theorem applies to our pizza slice predicament.
  • You see, the pizza slice has zero curvature because its surface is flat. But when you hold the pointed tip towards your mouth and fold or bend the other ends of the slice sideways, something magical happens!
  • By folding the broader end of the slice in a slightly U-shaped pattern, you make the tapering end become flat in one direction. And guess what? Once the tapered end is forced to be flat, the slice stays stiff and doesn’t flop down when you take a bite. Isn’t that amazing?
  • How to hold the pizza slice: So, now that we know the secret, let’s talk about how to hold the pizza slice. Remember, you want to fold the broader end in a little U shape, and make sure the tapering end becomes nice and flat.
  • Once you’ve done that, you can hold the slice confidently and take a juicy bite without any worries of the tip flopping down. Yum!
  • The Theorema Egregium, discovered by the brilliant Carl Friedrich Gauss, helps us understand curved surfaces in a wonderful way. Just like when you try to wrap a ball with a sheet of paper, the sheet retains its flatness even though the ball is curved, and that’s why you see wrinkles.
