Highest bribery rate in India – Says a new report

Transparency International is a German non-governmental organisation. It aims to take action to fight global corruption.
According to a survey conducted by them, India has the highest bribery rate in Asia (39%). India also has the most number of people who use personal connections to use public (government) services. The survey was conducted in 17 countries with 20,000 citizens in total.
Bribery means trying to make someone do something for you by giving the person money, presents, or something else that they want.
The report is called Global Corruption Barometer (GCB) – Asia.
After India, Cambodia has the second-highest bribery rate, followed by Indonesia. Maldives and Japan maintain the lowest overall bribery rate.
The report said the results showed that overall, nearly three out of four people think corruption is a big problem in their country.
For India, the report says that nearly 50% of people paid bribes as they were asked to. 32% of those who used personal connections said they would not receive the service if they did not use the connections.
The report says that a majority of citizens in India (63%) think that if they report corruption, they will suffer.
Bribery continues to be a huge problem in public services in India. It is often required if any work is needed to be done urgently or properly.
