Acoustic waves assist us to clean our oceans

Recommended for Secondary Grades

With  94% of the earth’s wildlife found in our oceans, it is important for us to take care of our oceans. Acoustic waves could assist us in cleaning our oceans from microplastics.

What are microplastics?

Microplastics are a category of plastics less than 5 millimetres in length.

As a result of the size of microplastics, it becomes very difficult for us to clean our oceans from microplastics. Microplastics can be easily swallowed by marine life. And those who consume seafood may end up eating microplastics too.

Acoustic waves

Scientists are always exploring ways to remove microplastics from the oceans. One of the experiments uses acoustic waves. In simple words, the sound waves cause vibrations, which can travel through solids, liquids, and gases. So the sound waves travel in the ocean too. A model shared by an Indonesian scientist demonstrates the use of the force of acoustic waves to separate microplastics from water.

This model was used to clean 150 litres of polluted water per hour. The team of scientists seems fairly enthusiastic about the process. They are researching more on the process before testing it in our oceans.
