AI-assisted surgery of an Emirate man’s leg!

Recommended for Secondary Grades

The doctors in Rashid Hospital, Dubai have successfully lengthened an Emirati man’s leg using “intelligent screws” and “artificial intelligence”. The AI-assisted surgery of an Emirate man’s leg is the first of its kind in the Middle East.

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence refers to a computer’s or a computer-controlled robot’s ability to do tasks normally performed by human beings.

The 25-year-old man had a bone deformity, which caused his right leg to be 9cm shorter than his left. His pelvic region was impacted by the imbalance, resulting in severe lower back pain.

What is AI-assisted surgery?

AI-assisted surgery allows human surgeons to operate surgical robots without touching them.

The operation was carried out by the leading surgeon in Orthopaedics Department. “The operation was risky,” the doctors remarked. The reason is international regulations only allow for lengthening operations of 4 to 5 cm, and they’re normally done in the shin or thigh.

What does an orthopaedic department do?

An orthopaedic department helps treat a wide variety of problems related to human bones, joints, as well as the muscles, and nerves that permit movement.

Challenge in the AI-assisted surgery of an Emirate man’s leg!

What is 'shin' in a human leg?

Shin refers to the large bone in the front of your lower leg.

The most difficult part was extending the shin and thigh bones, and inserting two nails at the same time to ensure that both legs were the same length, according to experts. Leg length differences of more than 4cm may cause a ‘violent imbalance’ in patients and could lead to terrible pain.

The surgeons decided to lengthen the bones by 9cm in total – 5cm in the shin bone and 4cm in the thigh bone.

Artificial Intelligence and Success

At the fundamental level, the stretching of bones is done by magnets. They interact with one other and with the screws when the artificially intelligent device is turned on, stretching the bones. In a minute, the two screws extend by around 1 to 1.5mm. Throughout the day, this process repeats itself in eight-hour intervals.

The patient was discharged on the second day, after receiving training on how to operate the gadget. The gadget can be utilised from anywhere. The treatment takes six to nine months to complete.
