Insects and Food Production

Over 7 out of 10 crop species depend on insect pollination. Therefore, insects play a very important role in the world’s food production. For example, apples, strawberries and cocoa all depend on pollination.

What is pollination?

Pollination is the act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma.

Smell is crucial

Research in the past has indicated that insects depend on a flower’s smell to locate the plant. However, air pollution causes such drastic changes to natural smells that it makes this search for insects very difficult.

Air Pollution – A jinx for insect pollinators

A study has been published in Environmental Pollution to measure the impact of air pollution on insect pollination. The alarming results indicate that air pollution caused a nearly 70 per cent reduction in insect pollination. In addition, flower visits by insects were reduced up to 90 per cent. So, “Air Pollution – A jinx for insect pollinators” seems to hold true.

Impact

Worldwide the impact of pollution is felt in the population of bees and other insect pollinators. In the event, safe levels of pollution are crossed the impact on insect pollination is serious and alarming. In the United States although diesel engines are becoming efficient they still contribute to air pollution.

The study also indicates that although newly approved diesel vehicles continue to exceed emission limits, controlling the diesel exhaust emissions will continue to be a problem for many years to come.

Although diesel fuel is regulated however it contributes heavily to air pollution.
