Amazing Animals: Indian Chevrotain

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Let us meet the Indian Chevrotain, also known as a mouse deer. Deers, in general, are lovely animals to see. They are gentle and beautiful. Now, can you imagine a relative of the deer that looks like a mouse and is also the size of a small dog?

Interesting Facts about the Indian Chevrotains

  • The Indian Chevrotain is found in India and possibly, Nepal.
  • It is a herbivore (eats only plants) animal and is part of the deer family.
  • Its height is about 15 inches and weighs about 3 kg.
  • It is a nocturnal animal (active at night).

Three Chambered Stomach

There are some things about this group that make them different from other grazing animals. Instead of having a four-chambered stomach, they have a three-chambered stomach.

Experts have noticed that it is found in sheep and goats as well as cattle and antelopes and deer. It is also found in chevrotains and giraffes and a few other animals.

Shy Nature

Mice deer go out at night to find new grass, leaves, fruits, and flowers. Considering they’ve been around for nearly 34 million years, we should trust them to take care of themselves. Their nocturnal and shy nature makes them hard to spot even by nature-lovers. So. if you ever see one, make sure to take a photo.
