American island opens to the public for the first time in 300 years

American island opens to the public for the first time in 300 yearsSipson Island is located off the shore of Massachusetts in the US. Last week, the island opened to the public for the first time in 300 years!

The island used to be owned by a Native American tribe known as the Monomoyick. They lived in this area for about 9,000 years. The island's name comes from a Monomoyick chief named John Sipson.

It was sold it to English colonists in 1711. The island was bought by a nonprofit organisation called Sipson Island Trust (SIT). They bought the island to preserve and protect its environment. They also wanted to honour the island's  Native American history.

The island falls under 'Area of Critical Environmental Concern', or ACEC. This means its nature and animals is of great importance to the environment.

Sipson Island is part of an area that is now called the Lower Cape. Visitors to the island can take walks along the beautiful island, go for picnics, swimming and many more. But great care will be taken to ensure that they do not disturb the natural environment.
