Ancient seawater bubbles in rocks!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Researchers found tiny bubbles of water from a long-ago ocean stuck in rocks. Experts say that there are small pores of seawater in rocks that have been there for about 390 million years.

This could make a big difference in how well we understand how the oceans change and how they adjusted to the changing weather.

The little drops of liquid are meant to represent rivers and streams. Large armoured fish, huge sea scorpions, and other sea creatures used to live in these waterways.

Key facts!

  • Even though this sample of water is not the oldest ever found, it is thought to be the smallest piece of the ancient sea ever studied.
  • A group of scientists found the seawater hidden in iron rocks in the upstate part of the state of New York.
  • At the same time, they found tiny flaws that looked like clusters of tiny crystals in a sphere.
  • These tiny crystals are called Framboids.
  • The team looked at these samples with an electron microscope.
  • They observed that the framboid had small bubbles or other features.
  • Researchers were able to confirm that the water trapped in the rocks was, in fact, salt water that fit the profile of the area’s long-gone inland sea.
  • They did this by using technology and their knowledge. The researchers were also able to figure out how the framboid deposits formed.
  • Even though it’s not unusual for rocks and gems to have liquids trapped inside them, it’s not very often that these things are looked at on a nanoscale.
  • Researchers hope that if they keep looking into these mineral deposits, they will learn more about how the ocean changed when the temperature went up.
  • Researchers will also use these methods so that they can learn more about how hydrogen interacts with rocks.
