Another huge diamond found in Botswana

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

A short while ago, we read about a huge diamond found in Botswana, Africa.

Recently, Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond found another enormous diamond again in Botswana. It is even larger than the last one at 1,174 carats. They found it at the Karowe diamond mine and has presented it to the government.

This is the third diamond of more than 1,000 carats found at the site. Moreover, this find means that till now, six of the world’s ten largest diamonds have been found in Botswana.

The country of Botswana

Officially known as the Republic of Botswana, this country is in the southern part of Africa. It is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. This means its population is very less as compared to its size.

Botswana was a colony of Britain (like India) from 1885 to 1966. After it got its freedom, it was one of the poorest countries in the world. However today, it is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

Botswana is also Africa’s leading diamond producer. Its Orapa mine is the largest diamond mine in the world in terms of value and quantity of carats produced annually.
