On 7 October, Anshu Malik became the first Indian woman to win a silver medal at the 2021 Wrestling World Championships. The 17th World Wrestling Championships are being held from 2 to 10 October 2021 in Oslo, Norway.

Malik settled for a silver medal after losing her 57kg final to 2016 Olympic champion Helen Lousie Marouli. She had come into the match as the first Indian woman wrestler in a final at the World Championship.

19-year-old Malik is the reigning Asian Champion and gave a heroic performance. But was bested by Marouli.

Malik is only the fifth Indian woman to win a medal at the World Wrestling Championships and so far the best one. Previously, Geeta Phogat, Babita Phogat, Pooja Dhanda and Vinesh Phogat have won a bronze each.

Another medal for India

Sarita also won a bronze medal for India at the Wrestling World Championships. She beat Sweden’s Sara Johanna Lindborg to win the medal. And became only the 6th Indian woman to win a medal at the championships.

This is India’s best performance at the Wrestling World Championships so far.
