Astronauts are growing space chile peppers on the ISS

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Earlier we read about astronauts growing lettuce and radishes on the ISS.

Now, astronauts who were missing the taste of chillies in space can also enjoy them. NASA says that they are officially growing chillies (or chiles) on the International Space Station (ISS). ‘Chile’ is how people in Spanish-speaking countries spell ‘chilli’.

They are growing a type of chile pepper called hybrid Hatch chile pepper. Hatch is a town in New Mexico, US and it is known for its hot chiles.

Astronauts are growing the chile peppers on Plant Habitat-04 (PH-04) on the ISS. Of course, it will take some time, at least about 4 months for the plants to grow. So, they will have to wait to taste it.

NASA says that when the plants finally bear chiles, astronauts will eat some and also send some back to Earth. Then, NASA can analyse the space-grown chiles. Moreover, astronauts will also find out how hot these chiles are compared to the ones grown on Earth.
