Rare supernova is traced to one of the hottest kind of stars

Recommended for Secondary Grades

Indian astronomers have tracked a rare supernova explosion to one of the hottest kind of stars. They are called Wolf-Rayet stars (or WR stars).

WR stars are extremely bright objects, a thousand times brighter than the Sun. They are also huge in size.

A supernova is a large explosion that takes place at the end of a star’s life cycle. It releases an enormous amount of energy.

Astronomers from Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) in Nainital, Uttarakhand, along with other scientists had been tracking a rare supernova called SN 2015dj. This supernova is in a galaxy called NGC 7371. It was discovered in 2015.

The scientists found that the original star that went supernova was a combination of two stars. One of them is a massive WR star. The other is a star much less in mass than the Sun.

Studying supernovae can help us understand more about the exploding star.
