Australia’s oldest rock art

Do you like kangaroos? These amazing animals that are found only in Australia are very popular.

However, it turns out that we are not the only ones who love kangaroos.

Recently, Australia’s oldest rock art was discovered in Kimberly, Australia. It is 17,300 years old. What has been painted there? A kangaroo!

The artwork is 2 metres long and is painted on the ceiling of a rock shelter. It was painted using red ochre. Ochre is a type of clay.

The oldest rock art shows that kangaroos have been important to Aboriginal (tribal) people of Australia since ancient times. Similar paintings have also been found in nearby islands in South East Asia.

Animals are seen in a lot of ancient cave paintings. Earlier this year, the world’s oldest animal cave painting, showing a pig, was discovered in Indonesia.
