Benefits of deep conversations with strangers

According to research by the American Psychological Association, deep and meaningful conversations with strangers help us make a connection with one another.

Most of us think that lengthy conversations with strangers will be awkward and others will not be interested in our lives. But an expert named Nicholas Epley believes, “People feel happier when connecting with others in meaningful ways and yet so many of us are hesitant to indulge in meaningful conversation.”

In a series of twelve experiments with more than 1800 participants (strangers to one another), researchers asked the participants to discuss/ask either deep or shallow topics/questions.

Shallow questions could be, “How do you find the weather today?”, “What’s your favourite TV Show?” whereas deep questions asked for more personal information, “When was the last time you felt good about yourself?”.

The researchers found surprising benefits of this experiment. Deep conversations tended to have a stronger emotional effect on the participants. The participants felt less awkward and more connected with one another.
