Britain’s Prince William launches ‘Earthshot Prize’ for environmentalism

Recommended for Awards

The United Kingdom’s Prince William has launched a new prize on environmentalism. It is called the Earthshot Prize.

What are the details of this prize?

Starting in 2021, it will be awarded yearly to five people, organisations or groups for solutions to the five “earthshot” objectives. They are: protecting and restoring nature, cleaning the air, reviving oceans, building a waste-free world, and fixing the climate.

The hope of the prize is that the world can have at least 50 solutions to the above five problems by 2030.

Nominations will open on 1 November this year. An annual global awards ceremony will be held in a different city each year, starting in London, England in 2021.

The prize aims to become one of the most prestigious (important) global environmental awards in history (just like the Nobel Prizes). Each winner will receive US$1.3 million.

Sir David Attenborough, the naturalist who has narrated many documentaries about Earth will be part of the council that oversees the Earthshot Prize. He has also helped promote its launch through promotional videos and joint interviews with Prince William.

Other members of the Earthshot Prize council include actor Cate Blanchett, billionaire Jack Ma, footballer Dani Alves, singer Shakira and the head of Pepsico, Indra Nooyi.

In terms of climate, 2020 has broken many heat records, which has been a great source of worry. Prince William wants to use this prize to change the world and also bring about hope and positivity.
