CDS General Bipin Rawat, a hero forever

General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) – is no more, but will remain forever in our hearts!

On 8th December 2021, an air force helicopter carrying ​​ General Bipin Rawat crashed shortly after take-off.  The helicopter was headed to Wellington, Nilgiri Hill from an Air Force base in Coimbatore.

The helicopter was carrying General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 other people (including some officers of the armed forces).  The helicopter was preparing for descent and in 10 minutes would have landed on its destination. 

Who is General Bipin Rawat?

General Bipin Laxman Singh Rawat was Chief of Defence Staff. General Raway held several ranks in his military career spanning over 40 years. He has been awarded several medals for his distinguished service in the army. Many members of his family have also served in the Indian Armed Forces.  

What made the helicopter crash?

The Indian Air Force is currently investigating the reason behind the crash. The Flight Data Recorder or ‘Black Box’, of the Indian Air Force helicopter, has been recovered from the crash site. Hopefully, an examination of the flight data recorder will give officials insights into the crash.

What is a black box?

A flight recorder or a black box is an electronic recording device placed in an aircraft or helicopter to facilitate investigation of aviation accidents and incidents.

Last rites

General Rawat’s last rites were carried out by his daughters at a crematorium in the Delhi Cantonment area. His mortal remains were cremated with full military honours.

The event was attended by Indian leaders, VIP’s and embassy officials of various nations, including our Honorable Prime Minister, Home Minister and other leading politicians.
