Celebrations in space for Thanksgiving and more

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

There are many enjoyable holidays to celebrate every year. But do you know astronauts have celebrations in space? Let’s find out how!

The US celebrates the holiday of Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November every year. Thanksgiving is a day to express what you are “thankful for”.

On Thanksgiving, families have a special dinner, which usually consists of roast turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, etc.

Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) also celebrate Thanksgiving and other holidays.

How do celebrations in space happen?

This year, on Thanksgiving, they took the day off from working and sat down for a special meal together. The menu included smoked turkey, green beans and mashed potatoes. Japanese astronaut Noguchi also brought some special Japanese “party food” to share.

For Christmas, last year, they played Christmas music throughout the station. The crew gave each other presents and also sang Christmas songs in matching festive pajamas to their different missions controls on Earth. During holidays, astronauts also get a little more time to talk to family and loved ones.

Celebrations in space are more frequent too. They actually celebrated Christmas twice: Christmas on 25 December and Russian Orthodox Christmas on 7 January.

As, for “Happy New Year” wishes, they call each mission control on Earth on New Year’s day as per the time zone.

New Year’s is a much bigger holiday than Christmas for the Russian astronauts. So, everyone gets together to enjoy a special meal. Another tradition on this day in Russia is to watch a film, which the astronauts do too.
