Childhood pen pals reunite after more than 70 years

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Have you ever had a pen pal?

Who or what is a pen pal?

A pen pal is someone you write letters to, telling them stories about your life. Most times, pen pals are people who live in another country or city. They are usually people you have never met.

Having pen pals used to be very popular among children before. This was when there were no emails or mobile phones.

Two childhood pen pals living in the Ireland and US have gotten back in touch after 70 years!

In the 1950s, an 11-year-old boy named Jim Johnston from Belfast, Ireland was pen pals with an American boy, Fred Heard from Oregon, US. They wrote to each other for months but stopped after that.

However, Jim never forgot his friend. Recently, his family encouraged him to write to Fred again, and he did. Fred still lives in Oregon and he wrote back to Jim.

Now, they are regularly talking to each other. They even had a Zoom call and are planning to meet once the pandemic is over!
