China announces plan to reduce single-use plastic by 2025On 19 January, China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced a plan that outlines China's aim to decrease single-use plastic by 2025 in the country.

What does the plan say?

By the end of 2020, non-degradable plastic bags will be banned in places such as supermarkets and shopping malls in major cities, as well as food delivery services.
 	Single-use plastic straws will also be banned by 2020.
 	Plastic bags will be banned across all cities and towns in 2022, though markets selling fresh produce will be exempt until 2025.
 	NDRC says it will promote alternative materials instead of plastic.
 	It will also establish a proper system to produce, use and recycle plastic products by 2025.

What has China done up to now to reduce plastic pollution?

In 2008, the country banned retailers from giving out free plastic bags and banned the production of ultra-thin plastic bags.
 	It has introduced a compulsory recycling system in cities some such as Shanghai.
 	In 2017, China said it would ban the import of foreign plastic waste.

China's use of plastic has been increasing rapidly, especially due to the rise of online shopping and food delivery.
