China relaxes restrictions on game developers!

Recommended for Middle Grades

The Chinese government has started to loosen some of the rules it has put on video game developers in the country.

What is gaming?

Gaming is playing an electronic video game, which is usually done on a gaming console, PC, or smartphone.

What are called gamers?

Gamers are people who play video games a lot.

There are still obstacles, but industry analysts believe China’s decision to cease pressuring its video game industry will revive the gaming industry.

The government had asked game companies to get rid of any content that was violent, seemed to glorify money, or encouraged people to worship celebrities.

This happened because the government was being strict. The rules were put in place to stop young people from becoming too addicted to video games and to get rid of content that the government didn’t like.

Key facts!

  • In 2021, Beijing’s strict rules killed the once-thriving gaming industry.
  • This was the first time that the largest gaming market in the world shrank.
  • In 2023, the first gaming licences were given out by China’s video game regulator.
  • Experts think that the licences mean that China will have better rules for the gaming industry.
  • This could also be the latest sign that the crackdown is about to end.
  • Analysts in the industry think that China will approve between 800 and 900 games this year.
  • Companies are also more optimistic about the overall growth of China’s online game business during the Chinese New Year.
  • The recovery of the Chinese economy, which has been hurt by a rise in COVID infections, is also a big part of figuring out if the gaming industry will be able to get back to where it was before.
  • In 2023, researchers think China’s online gaming industry will start to grow again.
  • But the rate of growth will be steady and slow.
