China’s new ‘floating’ train can travel at speeds of more than 600 km/h

China’s new ‘floating’ train can travel at speeds of more than 600 km/h. The city of Shanghai in China is home to the Shanghai maglev train or Shanghai Transrapid. It can travel at a speed of 431 km/h (kilometres per hour) and is the fastest commercial electric train in the world.

The new ‘floating’ train

  • Recently, a prototype (early version) for a new high-speed ‘floating’ train was unveiled (shown) in Chengdu, China. This one can hit speeds of 620 km/h!
  • The train is 69-feet-long and is a high-speed magnetic levitation train (maglev) train. It has no wheels but instead, uses the high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology. This technology uses magnets that allow it to ‘hover’ above the track. This makes it look like the train is “floating” above its tracks. This method also helps the train to travel faster.
  • This new ‘floating’ train was developed by scientists at the Southwest Jiaotong University in China.
