COVID-19: Cases increase in Europe as 4th wave hits

India reported 9,119 new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours. Till now, about 3.45 crore cases have been reported in India out of which about 1 lakh are still active.

The daily rise in new infections has been below 20,000 for 48 straight days. And less than 50,000 daily new cases have been reported for 151 consecutive days now.

India has administered (given) 118.44 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses till now.

The Union Health Ministry has written to 13 states and union territories, including West Bengal, Kerala, over declining weekly testing rates.

Around 66 medical college students, fully vaccinated, have tested positive for COVID-19 at a college in Karnataka.

Global situation

Many countries in Europe are facing an increase in cases as the 4th wave of the pandemic has hit them. The number of new daily cases in Germany hit a new record of 75,961. Austria has returned to a full national lockdown despite public protests against it. The Netherlands imposed a three-week partial COVID-19 lockdown last week and has placed additional restrictions for New Year’s celebrations. This led to violent protests in some cities.

Organisers of the Australian Open said that unvaccinated players will not be allowed to compete at the tournament in 2022.

Two lions at the Zagreb zoo in Croatia, Europe have tested positive for COVID-19 that they had contracted from their keeper. They are getting treatment.
