Recommended for Middle Grades

India added 89,129 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours. Today’s surge is the highest since 20 September last year when 92,605 cases were reported.

With 1.23 crore infections reported till now, India has the third-highest number of cases in the world after the United States and Brazil.

11 states and union territories account for over 90% of the cases in the country. Maharashtra is recording the highest number of cases. This is making the state government consider imposing lockdown again.

In Pune city (Maharashtra) there will be a night-time curfew from 6 pm to 6 am for a week. Restaurants and religious places are also closed down.

Uttar Pradesh has shut down schools for students up to class 8 till 11 April. All educational institutions in Himachal Pradesh will remain closed till 15 April.

Over 7 crore people have been vaccinated till now in India. The third phase of the COVID-19 vaccination drive for those aged above 45 years was launched on 1 April.

What is happening globally?

Italy has entered a strict three-day lockdown. This is to try to prevent a surge in COVID-19 cases over the upcoming Easter holiday.

A new study says that properly fitted multilayer masks can reduce COVID-19 transmission by 96%.
