COVID-19: Most countries worry about Omicron spread.

What is the Omicron variant of COVID-19?

On 26 November 2021, World Health Organisation (WHO) gave the name “Omicron” to a  COVID-19 variant. Omicron has several variations which differ in behaviour, impact, and how easily it spreads.

Scientists are continuously studying whether Omicron transmits faster and causes more severe diseases than other variants. Some cases of fully-vaccinated people contracting Omicron have come up.

India Update

India has classified some countries as the “ultra-risk” nations from the travel perspective. These are South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lasotho, Zimbabwe and Eswatini.

Other countries ‘At risk’ include all the countries in Europe, the UK, China, Brazil, Mauritius, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Israel.

With rising active cases, India has decided to suspend scheduled international flights from 15 December. Travelers from the ultra-risk and at-risk countries are required to maintain the quarantine. Strict testing procedures are in place for all international travellers from  “at-risk” countries. Anyone who tests positive is isolated and treated in a hospital.

Individuals/ citizens eligible for vaccination or the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine are now queuing up for taking the vaccination.

World Update

The virus has spread to at least 50 countries including the US and Japan. Several countries are imposing travel restrictions and strict measures. Lower travel, work and business activity can impact the economic growth of many countries.

Scientists believe that more studies would be done in the coming days to understand the contagiousness of the virus. WHO recommends that countries must co-operate with one another, share information and report initial cases. WHO will continue to provide important information as it becomes available on its website.

In the revised situation, it has again become important to maintain social distancing, wear masks, maintain proper ventilation at homes, avoid crowded spaces and maintain personal hygiene.
