Dogs can sense one’s pain through one’s sweat and breath!

A study done in the UK found that a dog’s nose can almost always tell if the people around it are feeling stressed. The study states that dogs are 93.75 per cent accurate at measuring people’s emotions.

That is in telling the difference between a person’s breath and perspiration when they are feeling bad.  This study shows that dogs can tell the difference between a person’s breath and sweat before and after a stressful task.

A sudden, negative emotional stress response changes the smell of our breath and sweat., and that dogs can smell this change.

Key facts!

  • To test this idea, researchers took samples of people’s breath and sweat before and after they did a hard math problem.
  • Breath and sweat samples from 36 people who said they were stressed were given to four trained dogs.
  • The pooches were of different breeds.
  • About 93.75 per cent of the time, or 675 out of 720 times, the animals could tell when the humans were stressed.
  • The accuracy of each dog ranged from 90% to 96.88%.
  • Dogs are very good at smelling things.
  • The four dogs were between 11 and 36 months old.
  • There was a male cocker spaniel, a female cockapoo, and two rescue dogs of unknown mixed breed.
