Falafel – Eat Street!

Falafel is popular street food and a delicious vegetarian snack in Israel. It is a yummy deep-fried chickpea ball which is commonly eaten with hummus (thick chickpea paste).  

Many of us eat ‘chole rice’ or ‘chole bathura’ often. One of the Israeli cuisine’s most popular items is also made from chole (chickpea).

  • These crispy and crunchy balls (fritters) are made with chickpeas, spices, and herbs.
  • It can also be served in a pita (bread) with tahini dip (crushed sesame seeds) and salad items of your choice.
  • The salad can range from chopped cucumbers and tomatoes to carrots, cabbage, and pickled veggies.
  • Falafel’s easy recipe makes it a popular street food in other countries in the Middle East as well as western countries like the US.
  • You can find falafel being sold on almost every street corner in Israel.
  • The falafel is believed to have originated in Egypt.
  •  It was called ta’amiya and was made out of fava beans.
  • Then, Jewish people tried making these tasty fritters and came up with their own version with chickpeas.
