Gol gappas or panipuri is one of the most popular street foods in India today.
It is so popular that many top restaurants in India as well as abroad in cities like New York, serve it on their menu.
Key facts about Gol Gappas!
- Gol gappas are also known as ‘panipuri’, ‘gup chup’, ‘puchka‘ and more, depending on the region.
- It is a vegetarian savoury snack, served cold.
- Gol gappas are believed to have originated in Uttar Pradesh or Bihar.
- It consists of a small round, hollow puri (deep-fried crisp crepe) which is filled with a mixture of fillings.
- The fillings include flavoured water (known as imli pani), tamarind chutney, chilli, chaat masala, potato, onion or chickpeas.
- People have even tried making gol gappas with unusual ingredients like mushrooms, mango, pizza and even chocolate!
- Sev puri is also another type of snack that looks similar to panipuri.
- Panipuri-eating competitions are also very popular at festivals as well as on the internet.
