Samosa is a potato-stuffed deep-fried which originated in the Middle East. It is very popular in India and other neighbouring countries.

  • This popular snack has travelled from Egypt to Libya to Central Asia to India.
  • Historical accounts also refer to it as Sambusaq, Sambusak, Samsa, and Sambusaj, all derived from the Persian word Sanbosag.
  • It is made by stuffing a triangle-shaped pastry with a mixture of mashed boiled potato, onions, green peas, spices and green chilli.
  • This pastry is then deep-fried in vegetable oil.
  • It is served hot and is often eaten with fresh green chutney, such as mint, coriander, or tamarind.
  • They are usually eaten at parties, restaurants, cafes and even as street food.
  • Samosas are made in different sizes, with different fillings depending on the region.
  • Another type of samosa is usually called ‘Shingara.
  • It is filled with vegetables and nuts which is popular in West Bengal and Bangladesh.
  • Mathri samosa is another popular snack in North India for spice-loving snack eaters.
