Egypt announces important discovery of ancient coffins

Egypt announces important discovery of ancient coffinsArchaeologists* in Egypt have found more than 20 ancient wooden coffins near the city of Luxor.

The Egypt antiquities* ministry has described this as 'one of the largest and most important' discoveries in recent years.

They found the coffins in Assasif, a necropolis (grave) on the west bank of the Nile River.
 	They were in two layers, with the ones on top across those below.
 	The coffins still have their original carvings of faces and hands. Their colours of red, green, white and black have also still not faded.

Where did they find it?

The site on which they were found was once part of the ancient city of Thebes, which was the royal capital of ancient Egypt.
 	Most of the tombs at Asasif are from the Late Period (664-332 BCE) of ancient Egypt.

Archaeologists have also previously discovered other tombs from earlier dynasties including that of the famous pharaohs like Hatshepsut, Amenhotep III, Akhenaton and Tutankhamun.

They have also made other recent discoveries in Luxor including an ancient 'industrial area'.
