Elephants from UK zoo go back to Kenyan wild in ‘world first’

Elephants from UK zoo go back to Kenyan wild in ‘world first’For the first time ever, an entire herd (group) of elephants from a zoo will be released back into the wild in Kenya, Africa.

The herd has 13 elephants and they live at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, England. All the elephants were born in zoos and they have never lived in the wild. So, this is the first time ever that people are trying to introduce zoo elephants back to the wild (called "rewilding").

A wildlife organisation called the Aspinall Foundation is doing this along with other organisations. They are using specially-built crates to take the elephants to Kenya. The crates will fly on a plane they have nicknamed "the Dumbo jet" along with animal doctors.

The group weighs 25 tons (25000 kg) in total and includes three calves (baby elephants).
Why are they doing this?
Through rewilding, wildlife experts want to bring local animals back to their natural environment to revive it.

While this is the first time for elephants, Aspinall Foundation has tried this successfully with cheetahs before. It hopes that this project will encourage the return of more elephants to the wild.
