Elon Musk plans to launch ‘Starship’ to take people to Mars

Recommended for Middle Grades

Elon Musk‘s spaceflight company SpaceX is working to launch the prototype (the first version of a product) of the Starship.  This will be a fully reusable rocket and spacecraft combination that will carry around 100 people to Mars.

The rocket part of the system is called Super Heavy, while the spacecraft part is called Starship. The Starship will have about 40 cabins, housing 2 to 3 people in each.

The combined system will stand 120 metres tall and is also referred to as ‘Starship’.

The Starship’s engine is called the Raptor engine. The spacecraft will have six while the rocket will have 28 engines. They will be powered by liquid methane (CH4) and liquid oxygen (O2). Using methane as fuel could make the return easier as methane could be created on Mars from its water.

Starship might play a role in Nasa’s Artemis programme. In the future, it could also be used to launch satellites as well as trips to other planets.

SpaceX is aiming to launch a Starship on an uncrewed flight to Mars in 2024.
