What is the Louvre?

The Louvre or the Louvre Museum (Musée du Louvre in French) is the world’s largest art museum. It is also an important historical monument.

The Louvre is located in Paris, France. It is most famous for being the home of the Mona Lisa, painted by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci.

For all those who want to visit this museum but cannot go, you can now visit it online! The Louvre has put its entire art collection online. That’s more than 480,000 works of art that anyone can look through at any time for free!

You can see famous paintings like the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo and many, many other items. They include sculptures, jewellery, furniture, textiles, and other historical objects.

Viewers online can use an interactive map and virtually explore the museum room by room. You can also search for a specific work of art. To go online, you can use this link.

For now, as France is under lockdown, the museum is closed. But officials are taking this time to improve the museum’s security system and clean sculptures.
