Recently, Angela Merkel, who served as Chancellor of Germany for 16 years, is taken over by Olaf Scholz. Olaf Scholz was the vice-chancellor during the tenure of Angela Merkel.

Who is Angela Merkel?

Angela Dorothea Merkel is a German politician and scientist. Angela Merkel was the first female and first East German to become the chancellor. She was referred to as the leader of the European Union (EU). She is the longest-serving chancellor in German history.

What is Christian Democratic Union?

The Christian Democratic Union of Germany is a Christian-democratic and liberal-conservative political party in Germany.

She served as the Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021. Angela had served as the leader of the Opposition from 2002 to 2005 and as the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) from 2000 to 2018.

Career and Life

Angela Merkel has been brought up in the German Democratic Republic. She’s been involved in Politics since an early age. She was a member of Free German Youth starting in 1968.

She achieved a doctorate in quantum physics in 1986. She worked as a research scientist until 1989. After that, she entered into politics and was elected as Minister for Woman and Youth in 1991.

Angela Merkel has never looked back after that. She was elected as Chancellor of Germany in the 2005 Federal Elections. It led to the merging of the Christian Social Union(CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of Germany.

Angela Merkel was named the most powerful woman by Forbes in 2018. She has done some remarkable work during her tenure as the chancellor.

In October 2018, Merkel announced that she would step down as the  Leader of the CDU at the party and she won’t stand for the fifth term as Chancellor in the 2021 Federal Election.
