First Test cricket match at world’s largest cricket stadium
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
We read about the Sardar Patel Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium, being built in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Its opening was supposed to be in 2020 but due to COVID-19, it opened officially only this month.
The stadium was recently inaugurated (launched) by President Ram Nath Kovind. It has also been renamed the Narendra Modi Stadium.
On Wednesday, the stadium hosted its first Test match ever. This Test (which continues today) is being played between India and England. It is the third in a four-match series between the two.
The Narendra Modi Stadium was rebuilt at the site of an older stadium called the Motera Stadium. Its visitor capacity is 110,000.
Before this, Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia (with a capacity of 90,000) was the world’s largest cricket stadium.
Largest stadiums in the world
The new stadium is also the second-largest stadium in the world overall. Only the Rungrado 1st of May stadium in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea is believed to be bigger.
