Flora: Rafflesia – World’s Largest Flower

Recommended for Foundational Grades

The leaves of most plants around us are green. This is because of a green-coloured substance present in them called ‘chlorophyll‘. However, not all plants contain chlorophyll. One such plant is the ‘Rafflesia‘.

  • Rafflesia is the largest flower in the world.
  • It can reach up to 3 feet in height and can weigh up to 12 kg!
  • The flower is the only portion of the plant. It does not have any roots, stem or any other part that a plant normally has.
  • It is reddish with white marks on all of its five petals.
  • The petals of this flower have a leather-like feel.
  • It takes around 9 months for the flower to bloom from the seed.
  • It is also known as the stinkiest flower because it smells like rot!
  • Rafflesia is commonly found in places such as Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
